Our famous Scenic Cape York Adventurer Tour is a great way to experience all that Cape York has to offer, along with some of the fantastic 4wding that it has to offer as well.  Don’t fear – you won’t need a ‘comp truck’ to take on this trip.  This trip is suited to 4wd vehicles and heavy-duty off-road camper trailers but is not suitable for caravans.  The vehicle requirements and preparation details are in our preparation guide, attached to the welcome pack when you sign up for this tour.

We begin the trip in Townsville, set to experience the mining ruins of Maytown in the Palmer River Goldfields region.  From there we’ll continue north to see some of the sights on the way to Weipa.  After a day of R&R, re-stocking of supplies and perhaps even a fishing charter, we eagerly aim for the infamous Overland Telegraph Track – The OTT!  We’ll spend a few days exploring and enjoying the many creek crossings and swimming holes along the track, relaxing with a swim each afternoon.

From there we count the corrugations on the way to Punsand Bay, the northernmost camp spot on the Australian Continent.  During our two further days at “the tip”, we’ll visit the northernmost point of the Australian Continent to celebrate a fantastic trip so far.  We’ll also visit the historic icons in the region, top-up any supplies and support the local businesses in Cape York, and of course, kick our feet up for a well-earned rest (should you wish to do so).  The option also exists for a day trip to the scenic Thursday and Horn Islands while up here – something definitely not to be missed.

From here we begin our journey south.  Still eager for a little more of the adventure that Cape York has to offer, we’ll turn in and travel the Frenchman’s Track on our way to Archer River.  The Pascoe River crossing, sure to whet the taste buds.  We will continue south, taking in the famous Lion’s Den Hotel and absolutely magic Daintree Rainforest after driving the beautiful Bloomfield Track.

Our trip will be edging closer to an end as we then head south, driving North Queensland’s most picturesque bitumen road – the Captain Cook Highway, on our way back to Port Douglas to say our parting words and wishing we were back at Cape York again!

Preparation Guide

For our Cape York Adventurer Tour, you’ll require the following preparations to your vehicle and camping gear.

  • A reliable 4wd vehicle and camper trailer in roadworthy condition, serviced and greased prior to the trip
  • Adequate Comprehensive car and trailer insurance to cover the activities on this trip
  • Ensure all suspension components are in good condition (we recommend having your suspension inspected prior to this trip to ensure bushes and linkages, etc. are in good condition)
  • Good quality All Terrain or Mud Terrain tyres of a Light Truck (LT) construction
  • An air compressor and the means to be able to deflate and re-inflate your tyres (an air hose and tyre pressure gauge/inflator)
  • A professionally fitted snorkel
  • Sufficient tools and reasonable spare parts to overcome ‘incidental’ vehicle issues on the trip
  • A two-way radio fitted to your vehicle
  • A small dry-chemical fire extinguisher
  • A first aid kit
  • A tyre repair kit (this will include tyre plugs and glue, and the tool to insert these plugs)
  • Any oil/coolant that you may require in the event of necessary ‘top up’s’
  • The means to keep your food and drinks cold (a car fridge is a good idea, but an esky with dry ice will also suffice). Note, you will need a dual battery system to run a car fridge
  • All food and drinks for the occupants of your vehicle during this trip. Note, there will be opportunities to purchase food en-route, and also purchase dinner at pubs and some camp grounds on the trip
  • Suitable quantities of fresh drinking water to allow your vehicle occupants to remain hydrated
  • Sleeping essentials such as tents, mattresses/stretchers, pillows and necessary bedding to ensure comfort while camping
  • Enough clothing and personal hygiene products to cover the duration of the trip
  • Any medical supplies you may need – this may include things like Panadol/Nurofen, or ear drops, and any means to administer these medical necessities

It is very important to consider the weight of your vehicle for any trip away.  We advise you take note of your vehicle’s GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) to ensure that you do not exceed the allowed weight of your vehicle.  Vehicles that are “top heavy” are susceptible to rolling over on 4wd tracks – due care should be taken to ensure the weight carried in your 4wd is as low as reasonably practical.  Heavy and/or overloaded vehicles frequently fall victim to the conditions in the remote areas, often breaking down to the point that the vehicles are permanently damaged.  You are personally responsible for the condition of your vehicle and the safety of the occupants of your vehicle.
