Welcome to the Spirit of Mining History Tour.  This tour is for 4wders of all walks and takes in the rich history of the North QLD Mining Days, along with the lush and Heritage Listed Daintree Rainforest, the only place in Australia where the Rainforest meets the Reef.  There is so much fascinating history to take in on this tour.  This trip is suited to camper trailers and light-weight off-road caravans, and the vehicle and preparation requirements can be found in the preparation guide below when you sign up for this tour.

We will begin this trip in Townsville, where we head north through the lovely towns on the way to Innot Hot Springs for the night.  After a relaxing camp, we make our way north to the lovely town of Chillagoe where we’ll base ourselves for three nights to make the most of the excellent Caves and unforgettable views offered from magical spots near to town.

After our incredible time at Chillaoe, we’ll make our way north-east to the Palmer River Roadhouse, our camp for two nights, where we can leave the trailers or caravans behind and make our way the next day to the historic Maytown Mining Ruins and take in the hard times from the 1800’s and early 1900’s, before returning to the Palmer River Roadhouse for the night.

We’ll head north-east again, taking in the lovely drive to the Lion’s Den Hotel for the night, before making our way to some pristine rainforest along the Daintree’s Bloomfield Track.  A lovely drive along the Bloomfield Track, we’ll pull up in the Daintree for our camp for two nights.  The rainforest is sure to excite – there’s quite a lot to see and do in the Daintree, and you are free to explore all there is to offer at your leisure today.

After spending some time in the Daintree Rainforest, we’ll make our way south across the Daintree River Ferry, where we will say our farewells in Cairns.  A trip that will definitely be remembered fondly!

Preparation Guide

For our Cape York Overlander Tour, you’ll require the following preparations to your vehicle and camping gear.

  • A reliable 4wd vehicle in roadworthy condition, serviced and greased prior to the trip, likewise for any camper trailers or caravans
  • Adequate Comprehensive car/trailer insurance to cover the activities on this trip
  • Good quality suspension, we recommend a 2” Suspension Lift with quality products, however, standard height vehicle suspension will suffice for this trip. All suspension components are to be in good condition (we recommend having your suspension inspected prior to this trip to ensure bushes and linkages, etc. are in good condition)
  • Good quality All Terrain or Mud Terrain tyres of a Light Truck (LT) construction on both vehicle and trailer/caravan
  • An air compressor and the means to be able to deflate and re-inflate your tyres (an air hose and tyre pressure gauge/inflator)
  • A professionally fitted snorkel is optional (but recommended)
  • Sufficient tools and reasonable spare parts to overcome ‘incidental’ vehicle issues on the trip
  • A two-way radio fitted to your vehicle
  • A small dry-chemical fire extinguisher
  • A first aid kit
  • A tyre repair kit (this will include tyre plugs and glue, and the tool to insert these plugs)
  • Any oil/coolant that you may require in the event of necessary ‘top up’s’
  • The means to keep your food and drinks cold (a car fridge is a good idea, but an esky with dry ice will also suffice). Note, you will need a dual battery system to run a car fridge
  • All food for the occupants of your vehicle during this trip. Note, there will be opportunities to purchase food en-route, and also purchase dinner at roadhouses, pubs and some camp grounds on the trip
  • Suitable quantities of fresh drinking water to allow your vehicle occupants to remain hydrated
  • Sleeping essentials such as tents, mattresses/stretchers, pillows and necessary bedding to ensure comfort while camping
  • Enough clothing and personal hygiene products to cover the duration of the trip. Note, there will be two or three opportunities to wash clothes on this trip
  • Any medical supplies you may need – this may include things like Panadol/Nurofen, or ear drops, and any means to administer these medical necessities

It is very important to consider the weight of your vehicle/trailer/caravan for any trip away.  We advise you take note of your vehicle’s GVM (Gross Vehicle Mass) to ensure that you do not exceed the allowed weight of your vehicle.  Heavy and/or overloaded vehicles frequently fall victim to the conditions in the remote areas, often breaking down to the point that the vehicles are permanently damaged.  You are personally responsible for the condition of your vehicle/trailer/caravan and the safety of the occupants of your vehicle.
